HALLOW, GEEHRER FINISHED ONE-TWO AS EDINBORO WINS DOUG WATTS OPEN
EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro men’s cross country team made sure that the Clayton Foster Era got off to a good start on Saturday morning. Edinboro hosted the Doug Watts Open and had five of the top eight finishers to outdistance Shippensburg in a battle of two nationally-ranked teams.
In all, six PSAC teams competed in the Doug Watts Open in preparation for the PSAC Championships on November 3 on the same course. Edinboro, ranked 24th in the USTFCCCA Division II Preseason Top 25, finished with 23 points, while 10th-ranked Shippensburg had 44 points.
Indiana(Pa.) was third with 79 points, followed by Slippery Rock in fourth place with 119 points. Seton Hill (130 points) and Mercyhurst (147) finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
Jared Hallow and Bryan Geehrer finished one-two in the individual race. Hallow, a redshirt junior, covered the 8K Doug Watts Course in a time of 26:12. Geehrer, a redshirt sophomore who was the 2016 PSAC Freshman of the Year, was close behind at 26:14.
Shippensburg had the next two finishers, with Robert Moser placing third (26:29) and Connor Holm fourth (26:30). Corey Wefing, a graduate student, gave Edinboro three of the top finishers as he posted a time of 26:32 for fifth place.
Colton Cassel and Jack Lacina were Edinboro’s other scorers. Cassel, the 2017 PSAC Freshman of the Year, opened his sophomore season with a seventh place showing at 26:38. Redshirt freshman Lacina was eighth (26:41).
With a number of unattached runners competing, redshirt senior Eduardo Tapia was 17th overall and 12th among college runners with a time of 27:00. Brendan Oswalt was 26th and 20th, respectively, at 27:30.
Edinboro will return to action on Saturday, September 15 at the Allegheny College Classic.
