CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Edinboro wheelchair basketball team opened up action on Thursday in the 42ndAnnual NIWBT National Championships with a 61-51 loss to Missouri. The University of Illinois is hosting the national championships. The Fighting Scots fall to 18-16 with the setback, and will now await the loser of the Illinois-UT Arlington game, set for later today, at 10 a.m. on Friday.

Edinboro came into Nationals as the five seed, with Missouri the four seed. The Tigers would take the lead for good five minutes into the contest at 9-7, and would eventually build a 13-point advantage at 24-11 with 7:12 to play in the half.

The deficit was still 12 at 30-18 with 2:22 remaining when Edinboro closed the half with the final eight points. Chayse Wolf started the run with a layup, and Jacob Spillers then knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to make it 30-26 at the half.

The Fighting Scots never trailed by more than eight points in the second half until the final minute, but could never regain the lead. Trailing by seven at 50-43 with 5:36 left, Kevin Atherley scored on a layup and Seamus McNally followed with a 3-pointer to pull the Scots with two at 50-48.

Sidney Attiogbe answered with a layup for Missouri, and after Cor’Rales Dupree made one of two free throws, the Tigers ran off the next eight points to take their largest lead of the game at 60-49 with just 49 seconds left.

Wolfe, who was named an All-American earlier in the week, posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 assists, adding seven rebounds. Atherley also had 16 points, making 7-of-11 field goal attempts, along with six rebounds. Spillers was a third Fighting Scots in double digits with 13 points, making 3-of-10 3-pointers.

Missouri shot 52.3 percent for the game (23-of-44) and was 13-of-15 at the line. Edinboro shot 42.3 percent from the floor (22-of-52), including 4-of-17 three’s, and was 3-of-6 from the charity stripe. The Tigers held a slight 24-22 advantage on the glass.

JAHN, SALLOT RECIPIENTS OF NCAA DIVISION II

DEGREE-COMPLETION AWARDS

EDINBORO, Pa. – The NCAA has informed two Edinboro University student-athletes that they
have been named recipients of the NCAA Division II Degree-Completion Award. Women’s
basketball player Michelle Jahn (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) and Abby Sallot (Erie, Pa./
Harbor Creek), a member of the softball team, have been selected by a national committee
based on their academic performance, athletic achievement and involvement in campus and
community activities.

Jahn is an Early Childhood & Special Education major with a 3.69 GPA. She is a starting guard
on the Edinboro women’s basketball team that has a 20-9 record and will play Virginia Union in
the first round of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional on Friday.
She will play in her 119th game on Friday, one shy of the school record of 120. She has started
106 games and ranks 12th in career scoring with 1,369 points, along with standing second in
career 3-pointers made (252) and attempted (718). A second team All-PSAC West selection a
year and the 2016 PSAC West Freshman of the Year, Jahn is currently averaging 10.8 ppg.
with 56 3-pointers in 169 attempts.
Sallot is an infielder on the Edinboro softball team, which returned from its southern trip earlier
this week. She has played in 55 career games and has five hits in 27 at bats along with 13
career runs and five stolen. She has played in seven games this year, going 1-for-6 at the plate
with three runs and three stolen bases.
In the classroom, Sallot maintains a 3.27 GPA as Secondary Education – Math major with a
minor in Special Education.
The NCAA established the Division II Degree Completion Award Program in 2001 to provide
deserving student-athletes financial assistance for them to complete their first baccalaureate
degree. Candidates will be students who have exhausted their athletics eligibility. To date,
nearly $6 million has been given to approximately 1,400 deserving student-athletes. Of those
student-athletes who have received the award since its inception, 90 percent have earned their
undergraduate degree using this program.
